20th Minute, Romaric, Ivory Coast v North Korea, 2010 World Cup Group Stage
Ivory Coast finally qualified for a World Cup in 2006 after a series of disappointments. They were placed in the group of death with Argentina and the Netherlands and lost narrowly to both before beating Serbia and Montenegro to win their first ever World Cup game. Four years later in South Africa they faced Portugal and Brazil and a point from their first two matches coupled with Portugal hammering North Korea meant they had to beat North Korea by at least six goals and hope Brazil beat Portugal to qualify for the knockout stages.
They made the perfect start, creating many chances in the opening 15 minutes before Yaya Toure gave them the lead.
A few minutes later Romaric follows up Drogba’s shot to make it two to give Ivory Coast more hope…
What Happened Next?
The Elephants missed some glorious chances but no matter what they had done, it would have been in vain as Portugal got a goalless draw against Brazil to advance on five points. Ivory Coast after two difficult World Cup draws have a more favourable one in Brazil which looks set to be an exciting group.
